Not receiving the second half of long(>160 char) messages

This has been going on for probably about 3 or 4 months now. I first noticed it from some friends that are ATT iphone customers but I recently noticed it from tmobile blackberry users too. If they try to send me a long text(>160 char) only the first message comes through. It used to be that I would get 2 messages with everything beyond the first 160 characters coming through in a second message shortly after the first. My current phone is the Thunderbolt. Anyone have any suggestions or advice?
Thanks.

Is there a piece of hardware that can plug into yagi antenna.....

and improve the reception at our cabin? Not looking for something that will cost a monthly subscription fee (we are only at the cabin for 30 days a year). Instead, we have an existing yagi antenna mounted on exterior of cabin and we need a device that will plug into it and offer more reliable reception in the cabin to our existing smartphones. Does Verizon have this and what is it called /cost?
Thank you! Currently, we are a US Cellular customer (they don't have a product like this) and may switch our five lines over to VZ for this reason alone.

If you have internet at the cabin i would suggest a network extender. Otherwise most phones do have a connection for an external antenna however verizon does not support using it because it's more for testing.

Yes, there are signal boosters available through 3rd parties and not the carrier. For example, Wilson is a well known manufacturer of such devices.
These devices can only boost weak signals. If there is no reception in a particular area, it still won't help. There would only be an initial cost to purchase and install the device, but no additional monthly cost.
Do you have Wifi available at your cabin ?? Your carrier may offer a device that would allow you to connect to Wifi and provide a local hotspot. I wish you the best of success. Let us know what happens.

As veriztd says, a booster or amp does this -- hooks to some external antenna, and uses it to provide indoor service. The only large carrier I've heard of ever selling them was Alltel and before that Western Wireless, in recognition of the ruralness and lack of cell sites of the western deserts. Technically VZW can terminate a customers service for using an amp (an improperly installed amp can raise the noise floor, interfering with other users use of the cell site.) They certainly don't sell them. You buy it from a 3rd party like Wilson.

maximumsignal (Google it) is another good source of solutions for rural reception issues. They also have a reasonable return policy if the booster doesn't work.

Newer model phones generally don't have antenna jacks, so you have to deal with a booster amp instead of the less expensive (and more reliable) passive hookup. If you go to the Wilson website you can look up if they make an antenna plug and cable for your phone.

Universal charger with all these new phones?

I noticed that with the Thunderbolt and Incredible 2, the charger is essentially just a powered USB port. Does this mean that we've reached the utopia of universal charger, i.e. I can use the Incredible 2's charger with the Thunderbolt, and vice versa?
Or more broadly, use either of these chargers with ANY usb chargeable devices such as other smartphones, iPods, portable GPS units, etc?

For the most part. Just make sure your device sees it as an AC charger and not a USB port from a computer, or the charge rate will be slower (ie. Droid Charge using iPhone plug).

Does this mean that we've reached the utopia of universal charger,Back in early 2009, PCWorld had an article about manufacturers and operators working on universal charging. It looks we've been seeing the results of that work. Excerpt: Moving to a universal charger will be a boon for both users and the environment by reducing the amount of waste, since fewer chargers have to be thrown away. It will make life a lot easier for users, who will be able to charge their mobile phones using any available charger, and when they buy a new phone they won't have to get a new charger.

Nice! Good point drFunk about the charge rate. And yep CellH I remember reading about the move to universal charger. I thought it was toward microUSB, which I guess is true on the phone end. But adding another detachment point to put in regular USB is a brilliant idea.
And for future references, I checked the input/output ratings of both the thunderbolt and Incredible 2's chargers. Both have the same and are good for international travel as well. The Thunderbolt might need additional plugs depending on the destination.

Don't forget that not all charging cables are equal. Some cheaper charger cables will only charge the phone when connected to a computer USB port and will not allow data transfer. Just something to keep in mind.
I do agree that a universal power adapter should be a reality across the board with all cellular manufacturers and all models of cell phones. I am tired of having to buy all new charging accessories every time I buy a new phone.

This issue comes up with the LTE MiFi. When plugged into a computer, the device thinks that it is going to be getting a firmware update, which is all you can do over USB data with this device (no USB tethering, like with the 3G MiFi), and turns off the WiFi. But if connected to the supplied charger, then it is fully functional. There seems to be some question whether the difference is the cable (only connecting the power wires), or that the particular charger has higher current capacity than most chargers.
In any case, as I understand it, the EU decreed that all mobile phones (even a certain one from Apple) use micro-USB for charging, but I don't know the effective date. The standardization seems to be also happening in the U.S., even without a government order.

Sprint dings Verizon on unlimited data pricing

If it makes everyone here feel better about paying through the roof for Verizon then go for the insults
i use to make fun of Sprint until i got them, both suck here in Phoenix compared to the GSM providers (muffled voice, low 3g speeds)
Sprint and VZ are neck and neck here as far as data speeds but the voice quality is actually worse on VZ than Sprint because of the EVRC-B codec, so for CDMA i'll keep Sprint and for GSM i'll keep T-Mobile because the AMR-FR codec and consistent 5+Mbps on my 3G phone cannot be touched by CDMA (and dont go on about LTE, until they make a phone that lasts all day on a charge with normal use for LTE i dont wanna hear it)
Enjoy your Full rate while you can because its pretty obvious what AT&T will do.
AT&T's 3G network has been switched to AMR-HR nationally, and GSM basically is. Thats what happens when a company has a lot of customers in the wireless industry. T-Mobile sounds great, but they are losing millions of customers and still are the smallest, Sprint also has half the customers of Verizon and AT&T.
So even though a few people say Verizon just sounds terrible, they must be doing something right to have as many customers and still having gains.
And I don't have to make myself feel any better for paying what I do with Verizon (funny thing is I pay less with Verizon than I would with Sprint), because their network is so horrible in the Southeast I would be wasting money to deal with that crap.

I use to be the biggest VZ fanboy (look at previous posts on here) until i moved to Phoenix, VZ is just awful here (not to mention i had plenty of dropped calls to go along with the VZ bill, something i never experienced with VZ until i came out west here)
My phone would not ring, and i'd just get a VM notification anywhere from 2hrs to 2 days later, i always had bars but that did not mean they were reliable bars.. I have a phone on page plus that still does the above so VZ obviously has not bothered to fix it here

Maybe in your area, but for the many areas like mine Verizon works best and they dominate every other carrier. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint can't come close to the 3G data coverage nor voice coverage down here. Just as T-Mobile works great in your area, it doesn't work so well in others.
T-Mobile lists our metro as "4G", but I can name a lot of places where the tower has no backhaul so its only up to 1Mbit/s, voice quality is good but the coverage still isn't as vast as Verizon.
Obviously I am not just stuck on Verizon because I have all the major carriers, and I carry all my phone's with me. And when I travel the best service is Verizon and then AT&T, Verizon does have problem areas but they are rated the best and doing the best right now for a reason. And its not just because they have been sitting on their butts.

U.S. Cellular (1) and Verizon (2) definitely dominate here. AT&T is third, T-Mobile is fourth (and still the only carrier here that has no 3G) and Metro PCS brings up the rear.

Out of contract with Verizon - possible smart phone switch without adding data?

Join DateJul 2005LocationUnited StatesPosts11,375CarrierVerizonFeedback Score0

Verizon made the change to require data plans after they had alot of bad press about peoples phones use background data, or their kids used data and generated $2,000 data charges. At&t did the same thing for the same reason. In the last year I was with At&t as a CS rep, I worked on a specialty team who applied those types of credits. Amazingly, in 1 month I applied over $400,000 in similar credits. Makes perfect sense why most major carriers now require data features on smart phones.

If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

Of course, that was $400,000 in "funny money", at some pay-per-use like $20/MB or whatever rate, $1,000+ in charges covered by some $10-25 data plan.

Anyway, you don't need a IPod or tablet either. Android phone, go into airplane mode so it doesn't waste battery on the inactive cell service, turn on wifi. Put on Skype (not Skype Mobile, that relies on VZW voice, and is buggy as hell anyway) and you even have voice and texts back.

Yes, I agree, a smartphone that was not subsidized, a data block should be an option. But, T-Mobile is the only one that'll do this.

That is $400k in money that they rightfully earned and now will not be collecting. If someone watches pay per view movies on cable all month long and racks up thousands in pay per view charges, is it the cable company's fault that they charge $4 per pay per view movie when their actual fees for the movie works out to be less than a penny per view? Should they not collect those fees owed to them? Or say you receive a letter from your employer stating that they will be doubling your salary. Then they come back to you after you ask why your paycheck didn't go up and they say "oops, the letter was sent to you in error, you didn't get a raise". Would you say ok, just pay me my regular salary?

Ignorance, or "we didn't know we were using data" is no excuse....just like "we didn't know the speed limit was only 30" is no excuse in traffic court when you're busted doing 55.

I believe your grandson is on crack jk Wifi shouldn't be able to interfere with vz signal.

wifi uses 2.4 & 5 ghz

VZW uses 800 mhz & 1900 ghz for voice and 3g data speeds
LTE uses 700 mhz

btw, I did notice that LTE interferes with speaker

Verizon Transferring from one 4G phone to another

Join DateAug 2004LocationNebraskaPosts211CarrierVerizon (was Alltel)Feedback Score0

Currently have a Droid Charge that my wife isn't happy with. Found someone that has a TB that they aren't happy with (and she'd be ok with having).

So, assuming I plan to go through with it how do I go about it? Our phone is currently under contract, and I'm not sure about the other phone.

Do I just swap the SIM card and SD card (to save the pictures) in her Charge into the TB and away we go? Is there anything else that needs to be done on the account?

We already have insurance. I'm assuming it will be null and void now? What about the warranty? It's not being tampered with or anything and both are only a few weeks old.

I know that's a lot of questions but unfortunately I can't find much on the web about how it works (probably because they haven't been out very long and it hasn't really come up).

Thoughts (besides opinions about the individual phones)?

Join DateJul 2009Posts10Feedback Score0
I've read others say they just swapped SIMs, but have no personal experience or official page to link to. You could meet the other person, try swapping SIMs, then call somebody and see if it goes through to know for sure.

I'd think insurance would continue billing you on your account, but in the event you actually needed to use it that's when they'd say 'Woah, this isn't the phone the insurance was for', so be sure to cancel the insurance if you do swap them.

As the previous post mentioned, I've read of a VZW subscriber moving a SIM from one phone to another... and everything worked. Regarding the insurance, I'm not certain how that would work.

Called a corp. store. They said that essentially that's all that needs to be done, but that apparently the phones need to be tied to the proper accounts also (which is easy for them to do). They also said the TEC will stay intact as the TEC covers the current phone on the account. Even if I needed to drop it and re-add it, I'm still within the first 30 days so I should be good. He wasn't sure about the warranty itself, but thought that would work out ok too...but if I have TEC it won't matter...

So, hopefully it really is that easy...
