Mobile payments users to grow by 40% to reach 2.5 billion globally by 2015

A new report by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that the number of mobile phone users making payments for digital goods will reach 2.5 billion worldwide by 2015, up from 1.8bn forecast for 2011. This represents a growth of 40%.

Mobile tickets for transport and entertainment were found to be two of the key sectors influencing growth although new service and application adoption will also be very important.

Senior analyst David Snow gave more details: “Whilst the mobile payments sector offers substantial growth opportunities, it needs to be seen by innovative players as a platform from which to develop new value added applications and services such as personalised mobile coupons, loyalty schemes, and novel augmented reality offerings.”

However, the Juniper report also warned that fraud levels with certain types of payments such as PSMS and direct billing are on the increase with mobile security becoming a key issue in the not too distant future.

Further key research from the Mobile Payments for Digital & Physical Goods report shows:

• The Far East & China region will be the largest, accounting for nearly 30% of the total by 2015;

• The Indian Sub-Continent is forecast to exceed 400 million users by 2015.

The report uses an innovative new approach to compare the positioning of some 17 mobile payments vendors. These vendors are also profiled in the report, enabling the reader to identify and compare their strategies. In depth market forecasts provide detailed five year regional data for mobile digital & physical goods payments, showing key parameters including subscriber take-up, transaction sizes and volumes. The report also reveals the strategies that are being used to enable users to pay by mobile through case studies from companies such as Virgin Media and Badoo.

Samsung Launches Faster High-performance Memory Cards for 4G Smartphones
Posted: 30-Jun-2011 [Source: Samsung]
[Samsung announces production of its high-performance microSD cards with advanced data transfer speeds that support the performance requirements on fourth generation (4G) smartphones.]

Seoul, South Korea -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced production of its high-performance micro Secure Digital (microSD) cards with advanced data transfer speeds that support the performance requirements on fourth generation (4G) smartphones. The new 20-nanometer-class* microSD cards have a class 10 speed rating suitable for seamless data storage and transmission of full HD video, one of the features becoming highly popular among 4G smartphone users.

“The industry demand for high-class-rated memory cards addresses the growing performance push for next generation mobile applications in more advanced smartphones including 4G models,” said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. ”As the industry adopts microSD cards with a class 10 rating, the superior data transfer speeds are expected to improve the mobile user experience tremendously.”

The new 32GB microSD cards can write at 12 megabytes per second (MB/s) and read at 24MB/s, providing users with more than double the maximum write speeds of a class 4 rated 32GB microSD card. The new 32GB memory card incorporates 32Gb 3-bit NAND flash memory chips and a proprietary 3-bit NAND controller to deliver the high performance.

The new card follows the introduction of Samsung’s 30 nanometer (nm) class*, 32 gigabit (Gb) 3-bit-per-cell (3-bit) NAND-based 32 gigabyte (GB) microSD cards in February 2010. By applying the finer 20-nm-class process technology, the productivity of the chips is raised over 30 percent.

As an industry pioneer, Samsung plans to continue to aggressively introduce new NAND-based mobile memory solutions for timely market adoption. Mass production of its 20nm-class 64Gb 3-bit NAND designed on advanced toggle NAND architecture is anticipated for early next year.

T-Mobile Launches 4G PayDay™ SMS Trivia Contest

T-Mobile USA, Inc. today launched the T-Mobile 4G PayDay™, a free, SMS-based mobile trivia game exclusively for T-Mobile customers.* A first-of-its-kind game in the U.S. to be launched by a wireless carrier, 4G PayDay encourages T-Mobile customers to test their knowledge of pop culture, sports, science, history and more. The goal of the game is to correctly answer the most consecutive questions within an hour. Eligible customers can participate in as many as three games each day. The player with the most consecutive correct answers in a single game each day will win $4,000 (“$4Gs”) and the most consecutive correct answers in a single game each week could win an Audi Q5 vehicle!

“T-Mobile customers continue to be some of the most active gamers and SMS users among any wireless carrier, and it is only natural to provide fun experiences to our customers aligning with their interests by creating a free trivia game with opportunities to win great prizes,” said Brad Duea, senior vice president of Value Added Services, T-Mobile USA. “This mobile trivia game is also a chance for us to celebrate our 4G network leadership as America’s Largest 4G Network™.”

How T-Mobile’s 4G PayDay mobile trivia game works:

* Starting today, T-Mobile customers can text START to 4444 to review and accept the game rules and participate in the 4G PayDay mobile trivia contest. The game will consist of multiple-choice trivia questions delivered via text message.

* The goal of the game is to correctly answer the most consecutive questions within an hour.

* If players get stuck, they can choose to get a HINT to narrow their choices, or to SKIP that question to continue their winning streak and get a different question. (Both options are limited to three per game and cost $1.00 each plus tax).

* The game ends with one incorrect answer or by reaching the one-hour time limit. Each player can participate in three games per day.

* The player with the most consecutive correct answers in one game each day will win the daily $4,000 prize. The weekly Audi Q5 vehicle winner is determined by the most consecutive correct answers in a single game for the week. In the event of a tie, the most consecutive answers in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner.

To follow the winners and for more details on 4G PayDay including rules and regulations, please visit http://t-mobile4gpayday.com.

* Only T-Mobile USA customers 18 years of age or older are eligible to participate. T-Mobile employees are not eligible to participate. Due to the laws in specific states, T-Mobile USA customers in the following states and U.S. territory are not eligible to win: Vermont, Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Montana, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska and Puerto Rico.

Neither access to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network, nor a 4G device, is required to participate in 4G PayDay. T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network is not available everywhere; capable device required to achieve 4G speeds.

“Audi” and “Q5” are used with permission of Audi of America, Inc.
